Health and Vaccination
Health and Vaccination
As part of the enrollment process, each student must undergo a routine medical examination with their home doctor, and parents must complete an online form "UWCEA Health Form" in our student database describing their child’s medical information. The deadline for this section is June 1st. Providing accurate and complete information will help us ensure we can effectively support your child's medical needs during their time at the school.
Each Campus has a Health Centre with a nurse in residence available at all times during the school year. The nurse can manage minor medical issues, and the Health Centre has bedrooms for students who need to stay for closer observation and monitoring.
The school also has a doctor on call, consulted by the nurse when needed. All routine medical services provided by the school nurse or doctor are included in the fee; for more serious illnesses or injuries, students may be referred to the closest hospital. In the event of a serious medical emergency, we will do everything in our power to contact parents/guardians. If we are unable to contact them or a secondary contact, we will seek medical advice and accept treatment for your child as needed.
Malaria occurs in certain areas of Tanzania. However, the Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions, where our campuses are located, are at higher altitudes, and malaria transmission is rare, so malaria prophylaxis is not necessary here. In coastal and certain low-altitude regions, where malaria may occur, students will be tested for malaria if needed, and we can provide them with prophylactic medication.
Details concerning the minimum vaccinations will be found here. It is advisable to consult your medical practitioner early, as they will have first-hand knowledge of your vaccinations to date and the vaccination program you will need for East Africa. All normal childhood vaccines are required for attendance, and you will need to provide all information in the online form.
It is mandatory for all Diploma students to have a valid international medical insurance that includes coverage for emergency evacuation from Tanzania to their home country.
The insurance must be valid and active at the time of arrival at the school.
If your family already has such coverage, please ensure it is valid and comprehensive. Otherwise, we recommend April International, the insurance provider used for our staff members. To arrange this, kindly contact Lesley Stevens at Alexander Beard International Education and NGO at lesley.stevens@abg.net
Upload a blank insurance claim form from your private international insurance provider to the Health section on the "Medical Documents" section on Apply. This will ensure we have the necessary documentation on file should we ever need to submit a medical claim on your behalf.
To ensure the health and safety of our community, all incoming students must complete tuberculosis (TB) screening. The following test results must be uploaded to the Health section of the student database by July 15. All documentation must be uploaded to the database as part of your medical records in the section "Medical Documents" on apply.
Required TB Screening (in order of preference):
IGRA/Quantiferon Gold Test (preferred)
If the IGRA/Quantiferon test is not available in your location, Mantoux/Tuberculin Skin Test (TST)
If neither of the above is possible, a Chest X-ray
Important:
If any of these tests return a positive result, the following follow-up is mandatory:
-Chest X-ray, and if required,
-Chest CT scan with contrast (enhancement)
For more detailed information, consult the secondary handbook.
